 Wildlife Notes From Rospannel Farm
Butterflies   (Lepidoptera)
    Green-veined white (Pieris napi)         Not that common
    Small white (Pieris rapae)                    Still very plentiful
    Large white (Pieris brassicae)             Far fewer than in the past
    Orange-tip (Anthocharis cardamines)  Two small colonies
    Clouded yellow (Colias croceus)         Vagrant, seen most years, sometimes in large numbers
    Peacock (Inachis io)                             Can be seen throughout the year on fine days
    Painted lady (Cynthia cardui)              Breeds most years on thistles after coming across channel
    Small tortoiseshell (Aglais urticae)       Seen on knapweed and hibernating in barns
    Red admiral (Vanessa atalanta)            Plentiful in the autumn on ivy flowers
    Meadow brown (Maniola jurtina)        Quite common
    Ringlet (Aphantopus hyperanthus)        Numbers vary from year to year,but always some
    Gate-keeper (Pyronia tithonus)            Plentiful most years
    Small heath (Coenonympha pamphilus)Fairly common
    Wall brown (Lasiommata mergera)      Very plentiful most years
    Small copper (Lycaena phlaeas)            At least two small colonies
    Holly blue (Celastrina argiolus)            Only present since 1998 (more holly and ivy planted)
    Common blue (Polyommatus icarus)     Becoming very scarce, used to be very prolific
    Small skipper (Thymelicus sylvestris)    Still plentiful
