 Wildlife Notes From Rospannel Farm
Dragonflies (Odonta)
    Small red damselfly (Ceriagrion tenellum)        Found in long grasses near pond edge,scarce
    Azure damselfly (Coenagrion puella)                Flies low and slowly over waters edge
    Common blue damsel (Enallagma cyathigerum)Slightly paler blue than the Azure and later
    Large red damselfly (Pyrrhosoma nymphula)    Always the earliest to emerge in the spring
    Blue-tailed damsel (Ischnura elegans)               All five colour forms in large numbers
    Emerald damselfly (Lestes sponsa)                    Never far from waters edge
    Beautiful demioselle (Calopteryx virgo)           Flutters one meter above the stream
    Southern hawker (Aeshna cyanea)                    *Not sure if any of these three actually breed in
    Common hawker (Aeshna juncea)                    * in our pool, but they are present later in the
    Migrant hawker (Aeshna mixta)                        * year in small numbers around the farm
    Emperor dragonfly (Anax imperator)                Territorial, we have about four pairs on pool
    Golden-ringed dragonfly(Cordulaster boltonii)Breeds in stream, flies up and down lanes
    Black-tailed skimmer(Orthretrum cancellatum)Breeds in small numbers
    Keeled skimmer (Orthetrum coerulescens)        Has a very short season in flight
    Broad-bodied chaser(Libellula depressa)          Earliest of the big dragonflies
    Four-spotted chaser(Libellula quadrimaculata)Breeds in large numbers
    Common darter (Sympetrum striolatum)            Common, can be seen up till November
    Ruddy darter (Sympetrum sanguineum)            Uncommon vagrant
    Red-veined darter (Sympetrum fonscolombei)  Very rare vagrant        BUTTERFLIES
